A new pool should feel like summer freedom, not paperwork and stress. If you’re a homeowner or a fencer working in South-East Melbourne, here’s how to get your pool safety fence designed, fabricated and installed so it looks great and meets Victoria’s safety rules from day one.
You can listen to this blog here!
A quick reality check (and why it matters)
In Victoria, any pool or spa that can hold more than 300 mm of water must have a compliant safety barrier, and owners must register it and keep it compliant over time. Inspections are required and a certificate of barrier compliance must be lodged with the council every four years.
What a compliant pool safety fence looks like (Victoria)
Core requirements you should plan for:
Minimum barrier height: Typically not less than 1200 mm around the pool zone. Boundary fences used as part of the barrier are commonly 1800 mm (check your site and permit).
Gaps and openings: No more than 100 mm under the fence or between vertical members.
Non-climbable zones (NCZ): Maintain a 900 mm NCZ on the outside of the barrier — keep furniture, planter boxes and climbable features out.
Gates: Must swing away from the pool, self-close and self-latch from any position. Latch release typically at 1500 mm above ground (or appropriately shielded if lower, per the Standard/checklist).
Registration & ongoing compliance: Register with council, then lodge a compliance certificate every four years after inspection by a registered practitioner.
Important: Exact requirements can vary with your pool’s installation date and permit (different editions of AS 1926.1 may apply). Always verify your barrier against the applicable Standard and your council’s guidance.

Design ideas that look great (and still pass)
Goal: a barrier that reads as part of your landscape, not an afterthought.
Flat-top aluminium: Clean, timeless, works beautifully in modern homes and coastal conditions; easy maintenance.
Vertical blade (steel or aluminium): Architectural presence with excellent rigidity and privacy when paired with planting.
Frameless/semiframeless glass: Opens up sightlines for smaller yards; ensure compliant gaps, spigots and gate hardware.
Boundary integration: Where a boundary fence forms part of the swimming pool safety barrier, assess step-downs, retaining walls and climbable features within the NCZ before you commit.
Thinking of a “removable” or “retractable” pool safety fence? It can be done, but when installed, it must meet the same compliance rules (height, gaps, NCZ, gate operation, latch positioning). Keep hardware robust and inspected.
On temporary pool safety fence during builds: Temporary barriers still need to restrict access properly; lock or latch all access points when unattended and use systems designed for safety compliance, not ad-hoc site fencing.
Walnut’s installation path
On-site assessment & measure – We map levels, surfaces, drainage, boundary conditions and potential NCZ conflicts.
Design for compliance – Heights, gaps, swimming pool safety gates, latch location, gate swing, and fixings are detailed to suit your site and the applicable Standard.
Fabrication – Precision-built panels and gates (aluminium or steel), powder-coated finishes to suit your palette.
Installation – Plumb, level, anchored correctly; we confirm self-closing/self-latching action and clear NCZs.
Handover – We coordinate with your chosen inspector (or help you find one) so you can lodge your four-year compliance certificate with confidence.

Choosing your style
Style | Look & feel | Compliance advantages | Best fit |
Flat-top aluminium | Minimal, modern | Simple verticals, easy to keep NCZ clear | Family backyards, contemporary facades |
Vertical blade | Bold, architectural | Strong rigidity; great with planting | Street-visible pools, premium builds |
Glass (frame/frameless) | Open, airy | Clear sightlines for supervision | Compact courtyards, designer spaces |
Boundary integration | Seamless edge | Uses existing fence where suitable | Where space is tight (check 1.8 m and NCZ) |
What affects pool safety fence costs
Metres of fencing and number of gates
Material & finish (marine-adjacent? choose coatings wisely)
Footings & surfaces (pavers, decking, retaining walls)
Custom brackets, raked panels for slopes/steps
Inspector feedback & remedial tweaks (we design to minimise these)
Care & keep-compliant checklist
Test the gate self-close from any open position; don’t prop gates
Keep 900 mm NCZ clear of climbable objects (pots, furniture, BBQs).
Watch landscaping growth near the barrier.
Book your four-year inspection on time and lodge the certificate.
